GENERAL QUESTIONS
What is Overlooked?
Overlooked is a company dedicated to offering people easy, practical ways to change the world. We want people to be aware of the issues that exist around the world and get involved in making a difference.
How was Overlooked started?
Overlooked was started by Dallas Harris in 2007 as Feed Just One – a company that sold shirts to raise money to ship food to starving people. We’ve slowly expanded and now offer shirts and other merchandise representing various causes.
Where does the name come from?
Our name comes from the Message translation of the Bible. "When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you? Then the King will say, 'Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me - you did it to me." Matthew 25:37-40 (The Message)
It was further inspired from a passage of Max Lucado's book "Cure for the Common Life."
Is Overlooked a Christian company?
I don't consider this to be a Christian company and I don't believe you have to be a Christian to love and help people. In order to truly change the world it will take all of us.
On the other hand, if you are a Christian and you aren't loving and helping people at every opportunity then you must reconsider what it means to live and love like Jesus.
This is one of my favorite quotes on the subject from Steve Brown:
"When a Christian sees someone who is physically hungry, a Christian feeds the hungry person. Why? Because hungry people can't understand the plan of salvation? No. Simply because that person is hungry. That's what Christians do."
Is Overlooked a nonprofit organization?
No, we tried that for a while and it was too limiting. We’re just a company that’s goal is to help people.
Are my purchases tax deductible?
No, even if we were a nonprofit, purchases are never tax deductible.
How much of each shirt goes to...?
We donate $5 from every shirt that we sell to the organization that is partnered with that shirt. In the case of our KIVA shirts we loan and re-loan that same $5 amount.
Why don’t you donate more?
Honestly if you’re asking this question you just don’t get it. Along with raising money for organizations we want to educate people and get them involved with making a difference which takes lots of money for advertising and traveling. Plus unlike almost every other clothing company out there we are committed to using shirts that are guaranteed to be sweatshop free. This alone costs a lot of extra money. Five dollars really is a TON of money to donate when you consider our expenses. If you don’t want a shirt and want your full $20 to go to an organization then stop complaining and just go donate it.
Why don't you help more people here in America?
Our goal is to expose groups of people that are Overlooked and provide help WHERE it is needed the most and HOW it is needed the most. There are needs across the world that simply do not exist in America to the same degree. Our very poorest people would be considered rich in a lot of world. We feel that the greatest need in America is a need for purpose and self worth. We address this by providing opportunities for Americans to help others. That being said, we do have a shirt that addresses homelessness.
How do you choose which charities to partner with?
You should do a shirt for World Vision, Compassion International, To Write Love On Her Arms, Invisible Children, etc.
We try to choose charities that we feel are doing a great job helping the Overlooked of the world. We check the financial data of each organization to make sure the money we send is going to good use. We prefer to partner with somewhat smaller, lesser known organization when possible to help give them some exposure. Most people already know about these larger organizations and they usually have plenty of resources to promote themselves.
How can I help?
The best way to help is by buying one of our shirts. It is great advertising when you wear it and people ask you about it.
It’s also great when you tell people about us or post something about us on your facebook, myspace or twitter.
You can even ask us for some free stickers or flyers to pass out to people you think might be interested. Just email your address and how many you need to dallas@weareoverlooked.com. Please only request as many as you can actually use.
If you really want to help us out check out our section titled “Get Involved.”
Can I work for you?
Probably not. Other than occasionally hiring someone on a temporary basis we don’t have the budget for regular employees. We would love your help as a volunteer though!
Can I go with you to (insert foreign country here)?
We don't travel to different countries. At this point we feel that international travel would be a waste of money. There are groups that travel and have a specific purpose for going such as "Invisible Children" filming a documentary that make a lot of sense. Documentaries such as "Invisible Children" are a great way to show the rest of us what it is like and what's going on over there without us having to spend money to go see for ourselves. As much as I would love to travel to Uganda, I feel that most "mission" trips don't accomplish anything that people that are already there can't accomplish. You could build a well or provide someone with a lifetime's worth of food for the same cost as your trip. Please carefully consider why you are really going and how much you are spending.
Will you come to my church/school/college/benefit concert?
I really wish we could attend every event that w are invited to. Unfortunately, we can usually only attend very large events unless we just happen to be in your area. If you have something that you think would be worth our time and travel costs please let us know at dallas@weareoverlooked.com.
Will you sponsor my band?
Maybe, check out the "Get Involved" page for more info.
How long will it take to receive my order?
We typically ship them out within 1-3 business days. From there it’s up to the USPS. It typically takes another 1-5 business days once we ship them. Please don’t email us asking where your order is unless it’s been at least 2 weeks.
Can I order over the phone or through the mail?
No, unfortunately we are not set up to take orders that aren’t placed through our online store.
